We are happy to see kitebuggying growing in Spain, and proud to have some of the driving forces on the team:
Teamriders Jon Muzás and Rúben Sereno.
Here’s their report on the
Spanish Kite Buggy League first round of the 2011/2012 season
This past weekend, 12 and 13 of november, the Spanish Kite Buggy League just started in Laredo (Cantabria), one of the best spots in Spain, and definately our favourite of all…
This time Jon Muzás and me (Ruben Sereno) not only as pilots, we collaborated as part of the organization, not too long ago we are part of the board of directors of the Spanish Kite Buggy Association (AEKB). We have worked hard to train and organize for this event so we were extra exited, to try to make people have a good time and to enjoy ourself also.
Some of the pilots had travelled more than 7 hours to attend the first event of the 2012 season, mainly because this season there are more and more pilots interested in attending the World Cup in Cherrueix. This is real good for everyone beacouse there is more to fight for.
On saturday the weather forecast was SE, not one of the best winds in Laredo because it comes from inland and it´s very, very gusty… but we had really good temperatures (more than 20ºC), at around lunch time the wind was blowing from the sea. Jon started the first race with Peter Lynn Vapor 9.4m and I started with Vapor 11.2m. During the race the wind changed, the breeze from the sea lost strength and started to switch into a gusty inland wind, this made the course much more complicated and made things even more exciting. Jon and I were fighting for 1st place. At the end of the race Jon was 2nd and I got in 1st.
The rest of the day the wind just kept on switching directions and strength for several times. We tried to use different type of courses to try to adapt to wind conditions but the wind was just too unstable and the tide was quickly coming in.
On Sunday we held 3 races with inland winds of 25 knots. On the first race both Jon and I tried out our 2.3 Vapor kite and short lines, but the wind was coming in extremely gusty crushing through the buildings. Jon increased line length to 20-25m and got some real good feeling, so we both rode with 20-25 meter lines and Vapors 2.3m. We both had a super fast start, Jon was pushing my back with his orange Vapor, but a super gust made both kites colapse instantly. My Vapor recovered instantly, but Jon didn’t have such luck and lost some valuable seconds. Finally Jon got in 2nd and I placed 1st.
On the next race the wind had decreased. Jon went out with Vapor 3.8m, the more time passed by right before start time the less wind we had. I waited untill the last second and started with Vapor 6.5m making a really good start, but a little tangle with another pilot made me lose some time. But once moving I gained positions really really fast. The wind started to increased, up until three of my lines broke in an upwind turn. Luckily I was just near the box. I changed to Vapor 5.4m as fast as I could but not fast enough because Jon had taken the lead of the race by far. I got in 2nd place and Jon finished 1st.
The last race of the weekend was looking promising. What will happen with the wind? Decrease? Increase? Could I regain 1st place? or Jon was going to be strong and win again making the points equal between us? We both raced Vapor 3.8m and had a fight for 1st place. It wasn´t a bad start, Jon started on 3rd position and I rode into second in the first downwind. It wasn´t far untill we found ourself in 1st and 2nd place. Jon came across a lot of traffic on the turns, and shortly I gained distance, every time we were tacking on the upwind side of the course we keeped on screaming at each other shouting go go goooo! we do this all the time to try and make us ride harder and faster. At the end of the race Jon was 2nd and I gained the 1st place.
It has been a fantastic weekend for everyone there, we had a blast. This season we will try to keep up the fight and cover with “Vapors” the Spanish Kite Buggy League.
Thanks to Peter Lynn for their support.
